The Solidigm Nearline SSD Stops the Spinning of Nearline Storage
See how nearline SSDs are displacing HDDs in data center solutions where the needs of the data are no longer being met by spinning disks as nearline storage.
The Solidigm Nearline SSD Stops the Spinning of Nearline Storage
What's in a name? We often make presumptions about definitions to ‘drive’ our assumptions. Such is the case with the concept of nearline storage. When used today, many people change that concept from a solution to a product. In this case, that product is the capacity-focused hard disk drive (HDD) now commonly called the nearline HDD. But that is not always the best correlation. A product does not become the solution but is part of the solution. Now let’s have a conversation about nearline storage to stop the spin of component being a solution, rather than simply a part of the overall solution.
Unfortunately, there is no universal translator for differentiating nearline storage vs nearline HDD, unlike in my favorite genre, science fiction, where you can “live long and prosper.” However, we can call out other storage solutions, like the solid-state drive (SSD). What if, just possibly, there was a nearline SSD? Does that then become ubiquitous with nearline storage as well?
Nearline SSD enters the nearline storage game
Well, Solidigm believes that nearline storage requires the use of both HDD and SSD technologies, but that the overlap of these technologies continues to evolve. That is where the Solidigm innovation in products comes into play. But wait, what does that even mean? Why is there now a need for such a new category of products, the nearline SSD, and what is it that Solidigm does to enable such a solution? Nearline storage occupies a very distinct place in the storage ecosystem.
Online storage vs nearline storage
In contrast to nearline storage, which is removable on-site storage that is accessed occasionally, there is online storage, always-on storage that requires rapid access to frequently-used data. This online storage space is largely occupied today by SSD solutions. Solidigm is a significant contributor to this effort with:
- Fast? Check. Solidigm offers a family of products that drive performance first.
- Mainstream? Check. Solidigm offers drives that fit the perfect middle.
- Capacity? Check. Solidigm’s market-leading 122TB and associated family.
Solidigm is also a founding member of the NVMe SSD interface. We have been integral in this technology innovation and customer alignment, back to the early days of the SSD market.
Nearline SSDs start displacing nearline HDDs
Supply constraints on HDD solutions are preventing customers from reaching their storage goals. Naturally when it comes to new categories of solutions, it is in the DNA of Solidigm to find the right solution to solve these storage goals. New products that meet the customer need might be ‘FLASHy’ and it might not ‘SPIN’ up extreme numbers, but it will certainly align with market demands. That is where the nearline SSD comes in to fill a gap with a right-sized product. Not as a replacement solution, but an opportunity to displace HDDs where the needs of the data are no longer being met by spinning disks. HDD applications of today are continuing to evolve, but they are also reaching a plateau. After an amazing run as the primary storage component on the market, they are unable to meet modern workloads alone. As capacity needs continue to increase, customers face challenges in performance, reliability, and scale.
Nearline SSDs create a solution for warming data
The time has come for the SSD market to address this new need: SSDs as the nearline storage solution. This comes from the market driving more data to be warm, available, and closer to online than ever before. AI – with its ML, RAG, agentic, and even other more traditional object, block, and file workloads – needs to be fed with data in sizes and amounts at speeds that are just not achievable with current constraints of performance and capacity tradeoffs in HDD solutions. Nearline SSD products bring new life to this middle ground.
This points us to our view on hybrid storage, which is yet another term that has spin on it. HDD with SSD for layered storage solutions to ensure customer success is great, but it is not a binary situation. It’s not just a 1+1 but is evolving into a family of integrated products for customer workload success. Aligning speed, capacity, access to more data, longer-term archival storage, and even true offline storage is not an easy balance. Solidigm is developing innovative paths to forge support solutions that address and solve customer needs for their warming data.
Nearline SSDs displace nearline HDDs for the future of nearline storage
As we move this new category forward, the data will show the value of nearline SSDs, and their proper place in the hierarchy of the nearline storage stack. Nearline SSDs will start displacing existing HDD solutions where necessary, augment them in others, and drive innovation to the next level. No longer will enterprises be stuck spinning in one mindset but can open the gates to a new paradigm of technology that continues to evolve storage in a flash.
